Saint-Gobain, the Malvern-based parent company of CertainTeed, recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new $167 million glass mat facility at the CertainTeed Roofing campus in Oxford, North Carolina.

The glass mat is made up of short filaments of fiberglass which are evenly distributed and bonded together by a polymer resin to produce a strong, stable and heat resistant fabric. It is a component in the production of roofing shingles.

“Building this facility in Oxford is an important step in maintaining our industry-leading service to our customers,” said Carmen Bodden, Vice President of CertainTeed Roofing, at the event. “Our goal is for this plant to be the new industry standard – it will use state-of-the-art energy and water reduction technology, as well as innovative automation. We thank the State of North Carolina, Granville County, and the City of Oxford for their continued support of our company as we continue our work to be a leader in lightweight, durable construction.

This is the largest investment ever made by Saint-Gobain in a roofing installation in the United States. He will support the company’s growing customer base in the southeastern United States and its strategy to expand into fast-growing markets.

In addition, automation and new technologies will maximize employee safety.
