Allentown-based PPL Electric Utilities has announced that it has won a 2021 Technology Transfer Award from the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI).

EPRI has recognized PPL Electric’s Distribution Protection Assessment Tool (DPAT) which automates processes, increasing the overall safety, reliability and efficiency of the power system. The institute’s technology transfer awards recognize industry leaders and innovators who work to improve efficiency, improve equipment, and improve the safety of utility customers.

“This tool will play an important role as we continue to build a safer, smarter, self-healing grid of the future,” said Steph Raymond, president of PPL Electric Utilities. “Through innovation, we have already built one of the most advanced networks in the country. Awards like these recognize our constant focus on providing safe, reliable and affordable electricity to our customers. »

PPL Electric used EPRI’s Distribution Protection Assessment Tool to create the automated system in an ongoing partnership. The automated system regularly develops and checks the parameters of the distribution network, allowing the entire system to operate more efficiently and avoiding unnecessary service interruptions.

Additionally, the company said, the tool can be used to identify gaps in settings, as well as system design and configuration, to eliminate potential system faults. This helps prevent potential safety risks to employees, customers and the public, the company said.

PPL Electric said DPAT identified six errors in the system which were immediately sent to engineers for correction, ensuring the overall system was working as expected.
