The University of South Carolina has added a former NBA executive to its faculty.
William A. Sutton has joined the College of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management as a practice professor in the Department of Sports and Entertainment Management, according to a school press release.
Sutton, a seven-year NBA veteran, is also an academic and sports marketing practitioner who brings half a century of experience in the sports industry, the statement said. It joins the top-ranked sports science program in the United States, according to the statement.
“After seven years in the NBA, I’ve come to the conclusion that selling a million-dollar contract is no better than putting a college student in their first job. There’s a rush to get someone started. one in his career, and I have always appreciated that,” Sutton said in the statement.
Sutton’s arrival also closes a long circle, the statement said. Guy Lewis, founder of South Carolina’s sports management program, recruited him to join the faculty in 1990. Sutton chose an industry role instead, but 32 years later, the time was right.
“Bill has been a longtime friend of our department. When the opportunity arose to bring him on board to work with our students and faculty, it was a no-brainer,” said the Department of sports and entertainment management, Matt Brown, in the release. “Bill will help our program as it continues to grow, serving as both a mentor to our students and faculty. I am extremely happy to work with him.”
As a practice teacher, a specialist position designed for people who can teach from professional expertise, Sutton will primarily work with master’s students and says her primary focus will be to help them prepare for the job market. work, the statement said. Sutton is the founder and principal of Bill Sutton & Associates, a consulting firm specializing in strategic marketing, revenue enhancement and organizational chemistry, according to the release. He has held academic appointments at Robert Morris University, The Ohio State University, University of Massachusetts – Amherst, University of Central Florida, and most recently University of South Florida, where he was director and professor emeritus at the Vinik Sport and Entertainment Graduate Program.
Sutton served for six years as the NBA’s vice president, team marketing and business operations, assisting teams with teams with marketing-related functions such as sales, promotional activities, market research, advertising, customer service, strategic planning and staffing.
His consulting clients include the NBA, NFL, Orlando Magic, Phoenix Suns, Miami Dolphins, Philadelphia 76ers, Tampa Bay Lightning and New York Mets.
